  • Waste minimization through training and awareness programmes in small scale industries
    • Preparation of sector specific manuals on waste minimization
    • Preparation of compendium of success stories on cleaner production/waste management.
  • Research relevant to international negotiations on Climate Change.
    • It includes all research/ data collection and other activities on need basis under various bilateral and multilateral agreements on Climate Change including Asia Pacific Partnership and Research related to impact assessment/advance preparedness of the country to deal with all issues related to climate change.
  • To develop and promote programs for clean technology and pollution prevention, and to formulate strategies and programmes in sustainable development.
  • Research in low cost technology in water supply and waste management, desalination water for drinking purpose, reuse & recycle of waste water
    • Research activities confined to urban water supply and Sanitation Sector including Solid Waste Management.
  • Research on Brown Issues, i.e. problems related to pollution, hazardous waste management, waste minimisation, development of eco-friendly and cleaner technologies & providing scientific inputs to to address policy problems related to environmental pollution control & management.
  • Research: interdisciplinary programme which emphasizes the ecological approach to the study of inter-relationships between man and the environment and seeks to generate scientific knowledge needed to manage natural resources wisely
  • To promote organic farming in the country by making available the organic inputs such as biofertilizers, Biopesticides and fruit & vegetable market waste compost and thereby better return for the produce.
    • To increase the agricultural productivity while maintaining the soil health and environmental safety.
    • To reduce the total dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides by increasing the availability and improving the quality of biofertilizers, biopesticides and composts in the country.
    • To convert the organic waste in to plant nutrient resources.
    • To prevent pollution and environment degradation by proper conversion and utilization of organic waste.
  • Integrated wasteland development based on village/micro-watershed plans
  • Related to afforestation and wastelands development:
    • Create awareness, application of appropriate technologies for the development of wastelands and training for capability building.
